I’ve done a lot of research into facial development and the maxilla, so I wanted to put together what I’ve learned in one thread.

If you care about facial aesthetics, you need to understand how the maxilla actually develops instead of reducing everything to “forward growth.”

  1. Embryonic development

The maxilla develops primarily from the maxillary process of the first pharyngeal arch.

Most of the maxilla forms through intramembranous ossification.

  1. The maxilla doesn’t simply grow forward

A lot of people describe maxillary development as the maxilla “growing forward.”

That’s an oversimplification.

Its development involves:

  • sutural growth
  • bone deposition
  • bone resorption
  • remodeling
  • displacement

All of these contribute to the final position and morphology of the midface.

  1. Maxillary projection

During development, the maxillary complex becomes progressively displaced relative to the cranial base.

This contributes to midface projection, nasal support, orbital support and the position of the dental arch.

This is one reason maxillary development is so relevant when discussing facial aesthetics.

  1. Transverse development

The maxilla also develops transversely.

The midpalatal suture allows transverse development during growth, while bone remodeling changes the morphology of the maxillary complex.

Maxillary width therefore plays an important role in the overall structure of the midface.

  1. Vertical development

The maxilla also undergoes vertical development.

Alveolar development, dental eruption and remodeling all contribute to the vertical position of the maxillary complex.

This has an effect on facial proportions and lower facial height.

  1. Remodeling

One of the most important things to understand is that growth is not simply the addition of bone.

Bone can be deposited on one surface while being resorbed from another.

This allows the shape and position of the maxilla to change throughout development.

  1. Why this matters for facial aesthetics

The maxilla has relationships with several structures that are important when analysing the face:

  • infraorbital region
  • zygomatic region
  • nasal base
  • upper lip
  • dental arch
  • mandible

Maxillary morphology therefore has a major influence on the appearance and proportions of the midface.

  1. Maxilla and mandible

The maxilla and mandible do not develop through identical mechanisms.

A deficiency in maxillary development can change the apparent relationship between the upper and lower jaw.

For example, a retruded maxilla can make the mandible appear more prominent even when mandibular size itself is not abnormal.

  1. The main takeaway

The maxilla does not simply “grow forward.”

Its final morphology is the result of a combination of:

development + displacement + sutural growth + deposition + resorption + remodeling

I’ve found that understanding these mechanisms gives a much better framework for analysing facial development than relying on isolated looksmax terms.

This is just a basic overview. There’s a lot more to maxillary development once you get into the different sutures, growth patterns and remodeling processes.
