What's a cossak?

They used to live at the borders in times of the Russian empire and explore new territory and defend it. Especially at the West borders of Russia fighting the Polish and Ottomans.


They were known for having their own minds and being rebellious. Compared to other Russians cossacks had no landlord they were serving.

The modern Ukrainians regard themselves as the ancestors of the Cossacks and even refer to that in their anthem.
