This 45-year-old man was taken to the hospital after suffering devastating facial injuries from a shotgun blast. The shot destroyed part of his face and left him in critical condition with severe bleeding and trouble breathing. Doctors quickly rushed him into surgery because his injuries were life-threatening.
The first procedure surgeons performed was an emergency tracheostomy. During this surgery, doctors create a small opening in the neck and place a tube directly into the windpipe so the patient can breathe. Since his facial injuries blocked his airway, this procedure was what kept him alive.
After his breathing was stabilized, maxillofacial and reconstructive surgeons began repairing his face. Maxillofacial surgery focuses on injuries involving the jaw, facial bones, and mouth. Surgeons cleaned damaged tissue, repaired broken bones, and used metal plates and screws to rebuild parts of his face. The surgery was meant to restore important functions like breathing, eating, and speaking, not just appearance.
The operation was successful and the man survived, but the injuries permanently changed the way he looked. Even so, the emergency surgeries saved his life and gave him a chance to recover.
