I’m sure a lot of you have seen this thread:

It received a lot of positive attention however I was constantly bugged about one specific statistic in the thread, that being the one about what lethality rate gun suicides have.
1777040464184

As seen above, I put gun suicide rates having a survival rate of about 60%. Now obviously that raises some red flags to anyone that knows the statistic. Technically according to the CDC, gun suicide rates have a kill rate of around 85 - 90%. However I put it as 40%? That would be a very large gap in statistics and would make it look like I’m trying to lie my way into getting users too scared to end their life (although you should never end your life in general.)

However just looking at the CDC statistics is not enough for a definite claim to be made, a 90% kill rate assumes you are in fact able to:

1. Shoot yourself (you’re going to be shaking like crazy. Pulling the trigger will be harder than you expect.)

2. Fire correctly and don’t misfire. If you’re able to pull the trigger and you misfire and the bullet doesn’t go into you and scrapes your chin and hits the ceiling or something, the brain fog will be immediately cleared and you’re going to put the gun down and never report it. This is a lot more common than you think. A single misfire of even a few millimeters is the difference between life and death, no matter how much you think you want to die, your body doesn’t want to.

3. Shoot yourself in the head. This is an interesting one because you’ve probably never thought of it as most users on this site at LARPs and have never seriously considered suicide besides the emotional aspect of it. Shooting yourself in the head (assuming you even are successful at doing it) is a fast way out if it’s a clean shot but it leaves a brutal sight. Most people don’t go through with it because the idea of your family/friends discovering you on your bed or the floor with bits of your brain on the wall and floor scattered around with an insane amount of blood pooling from a large hole in your head isn’t exactly the pretty sight they want to be remembered for. Hadn’t thought about that, had you? For this reason, many from the original group of gun suicide method users pivot towards the chest or abdomen which has a significantly lower lethality rate (if discovered, which they usually are super fast, there is a 91% survival rate.)

With what I’ve stated above, you can assume generally that actual rate is lowered by around 15%. There’s about 27,300 gun suicides a year (again, much lower than you would’ve thought right?) it doesn’t take a significant amount of people failing to wildly skew the statistics down and give it a much higher survival rate.

__________________

15% still isn’t enough though. The rate the CDC gave us was around 85 - 90%, this would mean the true death rate with what we’ve looked through above would be around 70 - 75%, I claimed a 40% didn’t I?

Well let’s get into the most important statistic of this thread: the actual age demographic of people who end their life by gun.

So what do I mean by the “age demographic?” Well one thing that is important to note is that I also adjusted the statistic used in my thread for the age demographic that is on this site, which varies from 13 - 40 years old. The reason that it’s significantly lower, is because the demographic that actually commits the most gun suicide is people much older than that, usually 45 - 80+ years old. These are people that do it due to believing they’ve lived a suboptimal life, terminal illness, severe mental issues, etc. The general idea is, they are a lot more determined because unlike you, they actually have nothing to lose. The majority of these people have no family, no friends, no social group, and a bunch of mental and physical problems with their health.

This means that they generally are a lot more successful, because they are determined and mentally stable for what they want to do, they do exactly what you see in the media, being take a gun, hold it up to their head, and fire.

You do not share this reality with them. 13 - 40 year olds are significantly more impulsive, erratic, and have a lot more to lose. Their body specifically resists death much harder. This causes what I said above, which I’ll go over again:

- Shaking
- Misfiring
- Not being able to pull the trigger
- Messing up and jamming the gun
- Shooting the chest & abdomen areas and surviving

You don’t share the same chance of dying with the 75 year old veteran with 3 different types of cancer and no living family or friends. All this combined puts your chance at dying well below 50%. You have a much higher chance however, of waking up in the hospital blind, mentally disabled, unable to move for the rest of your life, and so many other things. I guarantee you that you won’t ever try to do it again, but you will regret the decision you made for the rest of your life.

______________________

I will quote the most important statistic regarding suicidal ideation again:

A person’s effective iq is lowered by about 30 when in a depressive/suicidal state, meaning any decision or idea or belief you uphold in that state is wrong 99% of the time because your effective iq is that of a moderately - severe mentally disabled person.

Here is the result of one of these failed attempts for reference:

50943884527_1476353422_o.jpg

Absolutely brutal. This is much worse than any failo you could possibly have now. This is one of the nicer ones too, he can actually speak and coherently appear on camera. You aren’t guaranteed the same fate.

If gun suicide was such a surefire method, people on SaSu and other forums would use it instead of sodium nitrite. The reason gun suicides account for 50% of all successful suicides is simply because the demographic that uses them the most is the older, significantly more determined demographic.

I want you to close your eyes for 30 seconds and imagine this:

You are 22 years old, you tried ending your life last night and just woke up in a hospital. You can’t feel your tongue, you are blind in one eye. You have a machine connected to what used to be your nose, it isn’t there anymore, you blew it off. You regret it, you’re trying to cry but your entire cranial system is messed up, you can’t. You pray and pray and beg to whoever may be up there to take you back, to give you one more chance.

Now the 30 seconds are up, open your eyes. You are alive, you aren’t disabled. You’ve been given one more chance. Use it wisely, don’t make the same mistake again. Live your life to the fullest and achieve all you ever wanted, because you will, you just have to try.

The world is yours.

In basic training we were taught about the Sympathetic Grip. Extreme
adrenaline causes the hand to shake or the grip to tighten unevenly which, in a short barreled weapons that is often used to commit suicide can move the point of impact by inches enough to turn a fatal shot into a permanent, non fatal facial injury. Angle of incidence also matter a lot. Human skull is very dense if you hit it a wrong angle it can defect and just give your blunt force trauma instead of clean exit
