Throughout history there have been many instances of men going on adventures of varying danger as a rite of passage into adulthood.
Seriously, in Sparta you had to do shit like kill a Helot to be accepted as a man.
In England there was a massive tradition of joining a sailing boat to become more worldy.
Even in tribal cultures like aborgininals they have 'walkabout' which is fucking off for a few years at young adulthood.
I can't think of a single modern equivalent to this. I guess going to college is one but it's really not comparable.
Maybe all our problems come from a lack of adventure?
