after the baby stage (1-2 years) the male child develops individuated consciousness and then takes consciousness of how the triangular relationship mother-father-son is set (both are psychologically linked) - oedipal stage is theorized to range from 3-6 yo

in that phase the kid sees the father as the competitor for the mother's attention.
