I have been mewing for like around 14 months and my face has become more recessed than it was before. I was confused at how this could happen but I went on reddit and another guy had the same problem.

can you give examples of these stretches, and also what makes you conclude this guy descended as a result of tight facial muscles, and not pushing too hard with the back third?

different neck postures, although I do see the descencion

My jaw clicks sometimes when I yawn, is that a sign of tmj? I don't feel pain or anything

Dont underestimate the power of TMJ on facial recession

I saw this one guy tweet about how it is even more important to doing TMJ stretches than mewing as tight masseters will recess your maxilla. I did not believe him at the time.

Now here I am

I had really good forward growth before, my maxilla was like 1 - 1.5cm more forward then the rest of my face, now my maxilla is recessed.

yes, I have it too. Does not hurt until randomly it does, and for 2 weeks you are fucked and in constant pain, being the most intense the first week in which chewing becomes hell, but for me the period between these episodes is years long. Had it happen at most three times in ten years

Chewed and mewed from 2016 onwards, all I have to show for it is recessed zygos (LOR's by extension), antegonial notches which have only developed further as time has gone on, collapsed posterior facial depth and chronic TMJD. I made posts about it maybe a few years ago.

You've got the right idea.

When you tense your jaw muscles it contracts, pulls, and tightens, meaning your face quite literally cannot get forward growth. It's essential you relax your masseter apart from when you are chewing, otherwise you will achieve no results and can potentially, as seen here, lose progress. In doing so, jaw stretches can help. I agree.

Also, a further point to add for me personally - a gua sha helped me massively in relaxing my facial muscles. Just use some oil before you do it then massage your face. Watch yt vids of women showing you how to do it. Improves drainage and also relaxes muscles it's great.
