It is a beautiful story it's a bit grimy don't get me wrong but the plot is beautiful it's a fantasic realism that offers some realism most animes don't the original series was truly the masterpiece tbh it was built by an artist the plot the music the effort it's beautiful

whoever told you the anime adaptation is shit needs to get their head checked if they're talking about the 1997 anime series, which is top notch, one of the few anime i have ever enjoyed.

I dont know about the newer shit. I saw 20 minutes of 2012 or whatever films they made in that gay new CGI animation and thought it was an inferior product and I could just watch the original one again.
