You can agree with me or not, I think he was the best that ever existed here's why:
1. Invented a new training system named Heavy Duty
System consisted of high-intensity training (HIT) that focuses on infrequent , short , intense workouts
Instead of many sets Mr.Mentzer recommended doing one set in which you are taking yourself to momentary muscular failure
Other key factors of Heavy Duty was Low volume in your workouts , Progressive overload and Long rest periods between gym sessions lasting up to several days in which he prioritized on High Carb Low Fat Diet with protein intake of 1.5 g per pound of bodyweight , good quality sleep and low stress life
2. Competed with other Bodybuilders that are considered the best that had ever lived and won
He competed with such people as : Frank Zane , Arnold Schwarzenegger , Franco Columbu , Tom Platz
The most important competitions in his career were:
-1977 IFBB MR.UNIVERSE in which he placed at 2st place
-1978 IFBB MR.UNIVERSE in which he placed 1st place at the perfect score of 300 points
-1979 IFBB MR.OLYMPIA in which he placed overall at 2st place and 1st place on Heavyweight Divisionbut in my opinion he should've won this contest
-1980 IFBB MR.OLYMPIA in which he competed against Arnold , Frank Zane , Tom Platz placed at the 5th place
3. Lived in the last era of Bodybuilding where the physiques were aesthetic
Golden Era of Bodybuilding was the last era of bodybuilding where main focus of competitors was on definition , symmetry and shape instead of sheer size
Physiques of bodybuilders in that era had everything a man could aspire to be like
In my opinion Golden Era was the last era where women would find physiques of bodybuilders attractive after it ended the art of bodybuilding turned into a worse direction a direction of sheer size backed up by a humongous amount steroids ( i am not saying that before that they weren't using them )
4. He '' Humbled '' Arnold
As you can see in this picture Mike was never scared of an confrontatnion even if somebody was 1.5x bigger than him
Mentzer and Schwarzenegger had a battle of philosophies : intensity vs volume
Arnold compared to Mentzer was a menace , he was arrogant towards everyone he competed with
At the end we don't know who won this argument between them but some people say that Mike won it
HM. He had great genetics
A living example confirming this thesis was him and his brother Ray Mentzer
They both lived by the rules of HEAVY DUTY and both were great bodybuilders
