Often people here say the mirror is closer to reality than photos. It makes sense: look at random objects (watch, phone, wallet, etc) in the mirror and they look the same as in reality. Or look at your friend in the mirror and he/she looks the same.

Does this also mean that if you rank yourself as objectively as you can while looking at the mirror the ranking is close to your real ranking? For example, if you look at the mirror and rate yourself 8/10, then in reality you are 8/10? We assume that you rate yourself as objectively as you can and you are sufficiently good rater.

not true, Proper photos, not selfies is a good representation. But the most accurate representation of what you look like is a true mirror, That's how people see you IRL.

That didn't answer my question.

Also I'm not convinced that photos are the same as looking with your own eyes.

If you want to rate yourself the most accurate that you can, rate yourself based on the reflection of a true/non reversing mirror. Forget everything else.

Why non reversing mirror would be significantly better than non reversing mirror?

For some reason our brains hide the facial flaws of the reversed reflection from the mirror

If you look objectively in the mirror I'm not sure this is the case.

im surprised nobody here has posted a thread where they have someone in their life like a family member or friend give their opinion on wether mirror or photo look the most like the person

I think one just generally thinks one looks better when they look at themselves in the mirror, with lighting and stuff you may notice features that are not really noticeable most of the time, and the longer you look at yourself the more details you may notice. There’s a lot of cases of people thinking they’re good looking in the mirror, but when taking selfies or having their pictures taken look average or even ugly. Also depends if the mirror has a slight curve or not, even the smallest curve can distort you. I think if you manage to look good in mirror selfies then you also look good

legit when i check my face i check 5 mirrors in the house cause i look different in every single one
It is a good way to see an all around picture of what you look like
especially when you shine lights on each of them
I found so many flaws that don't show up on other mirrors

The camera has distortion too. Even some top-tier guys can look worse in photos than in real life or better photos. I also notice this in real life: some girls I know look better in real life than in photos (they look decent in photos too, not just as good as in real life).

The mirror is technically quite accurate (because the reversal doesn't matter since most people don't have severe asymmetries, and other people are seeing a reversed view of you 24/7 similar to how you're seeing another view of yourself 24/7).
The reason rather unimpressive looking people can consider themselves good looking in mirrors is due to mere-exposure effect and just a coping mechanism developed to make you feel better about your looks.

Selfies too are accurate in the sense that "lens distortion" exists in real life since if you move closer to someone obviously their face will look narrower.
lmao at copers who say "but this is a distorted photo etc etc" because if one is truly good looking, it will be evident regardless of most conditions.

Photos show you exactly what others see (except it's only one moment in time), but you'll feel weird at first due to acclimatised to your mirror face, as opposed to others who've always seen you that way. Videos are better for the reason in the brackets.

Since I've taken enough selfies/videos I've come to realise that it is quite representative of IRL even if I don't look as good as I think I do in the mirror. However I will say that some photos turn out a lot better than others for no apparent reason. For example the angles and lighting could be similar/same but I look different. I believe this is because every minor flaw (for example one day my skin can be worse compared to another day) is amplified in selfies, but you just have to learn to look past that.

I’m about 5/10 in the mirror, but I know for a fact that I’m actually 2–3/10. So the answer is no, it’s not accurate.

So it's just non-reversing mirror? I don't see a big difference.
Yeah basically you're looking at yourself the same way people look at you. ex you can read out the words in your t-shirt

Mirror is in motion, photo is static therefore mirror is better despite the reversal.

Yeah. So I don't see why your mirror rating wouldn't be accurate if you rate yourself objectively.

Do you look different or have you just got used to reversed image when in reality you look the same in both?

You need a non reversing mirror. Now you ask why non reversing? Because the more we see our face and the more we get used to it, the less striking asymmetries become to us and the better we become to oversee flaws and disharmonies. Another way to get your true looks are mirror selfies.

Sure, in order to get a realistic assessment of your looks you should assess them the first few times you see a non reversed mirror picture.

Another method is to video tape yourself when you clean your room for example. It can be horryfing seeing yourself then but you should use it for critical reflection of how you move, interact and what your posture is like etc.

Every good actor and political leader has done this, that's why they have such a good overall appearance. Take Putins alpha walk for example, I can assure you he practiced that for hours.

The mirror is probably what a person sees. A photo accentuâtes asymmetries, messes up the coloring and can easily be prone to angle fraud. Standing about a meter back from a non distorted mirror and making sure you’re observing the entire face and not focusing on a certain spot should be a good enough representation.
