Self taught Sys admin is the norm. No body teaches these things you figure it out on yourself. Do you mostly manage Linux boxes or do you work in cloud infra mixed environments also?

yeah, here u can learn it in companies too u don't really need to learn it yourself but i worked in media design before and it got boring so i just use the knowledge i had

i did work with aws and azure but right now i'm running my own server for all of my private and work stuff i've made a aws account today in the morning to test around and maybe to move my work stuff to it but imo it's easier to run it on a server where I have access to tbh, but my main work is not a lot with that stuff most time i do ads or get leads for our company

I started by doing regular SWE freelance work and was already getting paid for dev work. But I noticed clients were willing to pay extra for deployment and infrastructure setup. So I learned the deployment side as well. It helped me charge more and position myself as a one stop shop handling both development and infrastructure so that's how I got into Devops but if you mean how i got into the tech as a whole then that goes back much further when I was a teenager.

Yeah self hosting gives you a lot more control obviously, cloud is more about scalability, cost cutting and managed infra to remove headache. For smaller workloads i even recommend people running own servers.

yess the stuff we do doesn't really need a lot of scalability, we just run our homepage for customers, a few landing pages and internal programs for billing, voip and other stuff we don't have 100ks of visitors or requests daily so it's alright for now
