Polygamy can work in small scale tribe structures or temporarily when conquering a large number of people but there has never been a long term complex society that didn't fall apart. If you get 30%+ men with no hope they are going to rape and steal from the ruling classes polygamy can only be done by a very small group of elite men if it becames a societal norm that society would crumble.
