Men and women clearly despise each other's nature

To create a system where 80% of men and women are paired with each other, live together, support each other and have regular sex, is a miracle.

Monogamy is indeed a great concept. Has any society throughout history ever practised enforced monogamy and punished those who stepped out of line? If so, I'd be curious to know how they got on.
