morals surround what benefits yourself. this will be the same for everybody whether they realize it or not, the only difference is the degree in which this is the case. moral egoism is law.

Maybe there's no such thing as right or wrong and everything is rooted in survival

Didn't watch the video but you're correct. Morality is subjective. Cultures, ancestral history, technology and evolutionary biology decides them. As well as other things.

Maybe it isn't rooted in survival either; maybe there are no roots, and morality is completely based on your own personal experience. If it were based on survival, then you could say it's morally wrong to kill yourself (it isn't).

That is correct. There is no objective "right" or "wrong"

There is only goals and actions.

definitely selfishness. thats the way things should be, though. cheat, lie, and manipulate your way through life so as long as it benefits yourself and those who you care about.

It's an emergent property that society agrees upon. It has many roots, and different societies have developed different moral compasses because of this.

Morals dont exist

They’re made up to construct a basis of rules so we could all live like slaves

think of law, we have to follow them or else we rot in a shitty jail

Its funny how people show morality to “animals” but cant even have morality towards literal humans

society is forced to believe good morals makes you a good person as well

In truth it does not make you a good person if you have morals

"Roots" implies there is something set in place. There is nothing preventing morals from going one way or going the other; the roots do not exist, but mirages created by different societies have been put in place for mostly common agreement. However, this does not lead to an objective morality; therefore, it does not lead to "roots"

Morality does converge one way or the other. Where it ends up going depends on how it began formulating and what external factors interacted with said society.

My understanding of "roots" in this context is "something that causes morality to appear".

Under that definition, I would say morality has roots. It doesn't arise from nothing. It arises from self preservation, agreed upon norms amongst participants (you already mentioned this), culture, external environment, etc.

But nothing to trace back down logically for an "aha moment, so this finally explains why murder truly is wrong in the same way that 2+2 = 4"

Morals are nearly the same thing as laws. They aren't a definitive way of blocking someone from doing something; they are both used to lower the amount of crime and civil unrest that occurs. They are both human constructs that make you a societal outcast if you disobey.

I don't think I've ever heard someone on the internet tell me they were incorrect, truly a first.

And I wouldn't even say you were incorrect, we just had different ideas of what "roots" meant in this context. Your understanding of it being agreed upon norms and subjective, and having high variance ("nothing preventing them from going one way or another") were all correct.

what if morality is neither subjective nor objective, we just don't know? because we don't have an obvious moral code, but the majority of the population follos specific rules based on a moral code so is it really subjective?

differences between moral code between different populations and times are obvious so if morality was objective that wouldn't happen. individuals also have different moralities
