Anterior inter-maxillary distance increased by 2.8 mm, posterior inter-zygomatic distance by 2.4 mm, angle of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone by 1.7° and 2.1° (right and left side) (P < 0.01). Changes in posterior inter-temporal distance and zygomaticotemporal angle were negligible (P > 0.05).

ZSO is way riskier than MSE.
Also MSE can increase IPD, mouth width. Nose can be fixed by rhinoplasty so not a problem.

Some people literally get implants/fillers ONLY to get roughly 3-4mm lateral projection.

Also there’s got to be noticeable lateral projection in order to get THIS MUCH increase in 3/4 view projection.

The anterior inter-maxillary area is the bone directly around the teeth, basically the palate.

From what I can remember the average time wearing the MSE was like 36 days and they stopped when the upper palate became as wide as the lower palate.

From this study Comparison of skeletal and dental changes with MSE (Maxillary Skeletal Expander) and Hyrax appliance using CBCT imaging:

"The group treated with MSE consisted of 15 patients (mean age 20.8 years, range 14-38 years, 3 male and 12 female)."

Lower zygomatic increased by 4.62mm on average, and intermolar by 8.33mm so their zygos got 55% of the expansion of their palates.

This is how they measured upper & lower zygomatic distance.

How? For people with problems that MSE can address, it is worth it. Also, using MSE for bone-anchored facepulling could provide insane results; this modification could be revolutionary, but still it needs to be explored, so it couldn't be declared cope (or not cope) just yet in that regard.
