its tries to be 'muh shonen but sophisticated' which entirely misses the point

naruto and one piece are, for example, actually thematically and narratively more sophisticated and interesting than hunter hunter despite the childishness of the medium but bug people would never notice because hxh is more 'adult' and has gore and essays, complex magic rules, etc.

its like GoT vs more traditional fantasy, once you get past the novelty of 'oh wow rape and swearing and intrigue and main characters dying how surprising' you realize that subversion is parasitic on that which it subverts and cant conclude satisfactorily unless it abandons the project of subversion and deconstruction and makes itself like that which its intended to critique. Everyone being murdered by white walkers and dany going nuts isnt compelling but jon snow rallying everyone heroically, defeating them, becoming rightful king/marrying dany/etc. wouldnt be ebic fedora subversive girlboss rape mode so they couldnt do it.
Gon remaining the Shonen mc is similarly impossible (why everyone hates the magical way he got wished back to health).
