My criticism of Islam
I am 16 years old and I have researched and learned about Islam by myself. I got the idea to write this text because I have recently discussed this topic with some people. One night, I wrote down my basic thoughts and arguments and later developed and expanded them. Every paragraph covers a different short topic.
First I will talk about my criticism of Allah, hell and religion. Then I will talk about existence, morality and the origin of humans. At the end I will refute two alleged proofs for Islam from the Quran.
Why would Allah punish us so strongly if we are his creations? If your own child makes a mistake, would you let them suffer forever and burn their skin again and again while it grows back? For me it is difficult to understand how eternal punishment can fit with a fair and merciful God.
Allah does not need us. So why should we put so much effort into worshipping him, especially when he did not have to make any effort to create us? If he requires so much worship and belief from us, it seems selfish to me.
In the past, people had less scientific knowledge and searched for explanations for their lives. Muhammad was a smart and influential man who recognized this situation and created a system with clear rules. Islam gives people specific instructions about how they should live, behave and think. This creates order, for example through rules about cleanliness and certain duties. But is it really true order if people who think differently or do not believe in these rules are treated differently?
People are strongly influenced and partly controlled by religious rules and beliefs. They are promised something after death and because it can never truly be proven whether it is real, this system can continue until the end of humanity. Heaven and hell fit very closely with human instincts and fears, which is why I believe they are ideas created by humans.
If Islam appeared today and was created as a new religion, many people would consider it ridiculous. Religions are human answers to existential questions rather than supernatural revelations.
A person who murders people but prays and believes in Allah may have a better chance of entering heaven than a helpful Christian who helps others and wants peace (not because I think Christianity is better, but only as an example of someone who thinks differently). Murder can be forgiven by Allah, but not believing in Allah and not worshipping him may not be forgiven according to some interpretations. In the end muslims say that Allah will decide, but I find it difficult to understand why faith is considered more important than moral behavior.
Now I‘ll answer some questions that I thought people could ask themselves:
“But where do we go after death?”
A simple counter question: Where were you before you were born?
“Why do we exist?”
The universe has existed for an unimaginable amount of time and is unbelievably large. If you put a monkey in front of a keyboard for an infinite amount of time, it would eventually write every book in the world in the right chronological order. The combination of the age and size of the universe allows coincidences that many people cannot imagine.
“Who created us?”
Why does someone have to create us?
A builder builds a house, but who built the builder? If everything needs a creator, then who created the creator? It is difficult for many people to imagine how we came into existence because we are used to thinking that every creation needs a creator.
„But there is evidence in the quran! Things we couldn‘t have known back then!“

Quran 51:47 – Expansion of the universe
Many Muslims see the verse “And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander” as proof that the Quran predicted the expansion of the universe. However in my opinion this is not a clear proof. This interpretation only became popular after the expansion of the universe was scientifically discovered. Was it really a prediction or was the verse interpreted in that way after the scientific discovery? The words are not clearly defined and it seems like modern knowledge was added into an old text afterwards.
Quran 23:12–14 – Development of humans
Many Muslims see the description of human development in the womb as a scientific miracle. For me, this is not a clear proof because people already had observations and ideas about the creation of life before Islam. Also the terms in the Quran are not so precise that we can clearly say that modern scientific knowledge was being described. It seems more like some people connect modern discoveries with old texts afterwards.
