Yesterday my boss told

"Jason I'm going to be direct with you. In this environment people form impressions quickly and yes they judge. How you present yourself how you speak how you dress it all matters Now, your English is strong you speak clearly you're fluent and you communicate well unlike some people But your accent is a barrier. The hum that you make after every sentence that is quite unnatural It's something that's affecting how others perceive you whether fair or not. I believe it's something you can work on and improve with some focused effort. You're sharp, and you have potential-don't let something as fixable as this hold you back"

How can I get rid of my accent?

I don't think my accent is very strong but it is there for sure.
The less Hindi and the more English you will speak, the curry accent will fade away eventually I believe.

You can get "elocution classes" to help you with your accent.

Ngl, he sounds like a good boss who is straightforward about things. Sure, it wouldn't sound nice at first, but this is the best way he could convey his message.

Have you tried any classes/techniques to modify your accent?

Should be pretty easy for you to fake a proper accent since you listen to a lot of knicker music

If the majority demographic at your workplace is non-Indian, you will be forced to switch over to a non-Indian accent. If the majority demographic is Indian, the rest will be forced to switch to an Indian accent.

brutal, i never pictured you having a curry accent. you could try consuming more american tv shows if you’re serious about sounding β€˜american.’ mimic how they talk, the way they talk, repeat lines out loud, talk to yourself, have conversations in the mirror. that’s how my dad who came over here in the β€˜90s sounds pretty native

It’ll just come with time, make sure you’re interacting with people that have the accent you want, consume content from them as well. Over time you’ll just naturally start copying them as you converse with them, speak slow and breathe fully when speaking.

Hard to change ur accent after 20+ years of living in curry land. Tbh your best bet is to just fake it until it becomes second nature

True. It take a lot of time to pick up accent unlike language.

I know a number of southerners literally train themselves not to speak in hillbilly accents in the North to avoid being seen as unsophisticated rednecks.

I thought that kind of low class hillbilly accent was a halo. Makes you sound like some kind of cowboy or something

Unironically chatgpt can probably give you a speech therapy exercise routine to do in order to decrease your accent. Or talk to a speech therapist in person
