I know a number of southerners literally train themselves not to speak in hillbilly accents in the North to avoid being seen as unsophisticated rednecks.

Oddly enough. When I moved down south, I somewhat quickly noticed I started talking more like a southerner. I have also seen some who years after graduation have kept their accent. It seems very individual based on how malleable, or at least impressionable, you are.
