Between 1992 and 2013 the Argentine photographer Martin Weber, born in exile in Chile, traveled through several Latin American countries to carry out a photographic project. This consisted of portraying people from several Latin American countries holding a blackboard on which they wrote their dreams (their longings). The project materialized in the book "Map of Latin American Dreams", which turned out to be an X-ray of the pain and hopes of the American continent.

In 2007 Weber arrived in a community in Medellin, Colombia. There he met Cristian, a 15-year-old teenager who went to his school every day. Not to study, but to eat. His body was full of scars: bullet and stab marks, physical evidence of street fights between hitmen. He had a dull look.

He told the photographer that if he had seen him on the street he would have stolen his equipment, and if he had resisted, he probably would have stabbed him.

As part of his project, Weber asked Cristian to write on the blackboard before photographing him. He wrote: "My dream is to die" (Spanish: "Mi sueño es morirme"). Months after photographing him, Cristian's body was found shot on the banks of a river.

Weber asked him when he took the photograph why that dream. Cristian replied that it was because he was homeless and did bad things.

Weber wrote: "Our destiny can only be changed if we allow ourselves to imagine a different one from the one we have been given".

What better thing is there to be than to die? No more suffering. No more things. No more craving. No more anything. Back to the sweet eternal peace of nothingness. As if nothing had ever happened.
