I was born and raised as a JW - obviously didn't agree to be inside the religion, but that's how all religions work.
You'd expect a religion to be something that you can take pride in. Something that fills you with hope and faith of a beautiful life. That might be the case with Christianity, or Buddhism, hell maybe even Islam. But not JW.
The religion of JW is the most monotone and bland belief i have ever experienced. It can literally be explained by simply showing you an image of what their kingdom and assembly halls (basically their churches) look like:
It would be rare for there to be a fake flower for you to look at in one of those halls. Which is on purpose of course, in order to not direct attention away from jehova! You can imagine how much of a hell this must be for a child. To sit still for 2 hours (or 8 hours during major events) with nothing to look at except the random old guy speaking about bullshit you don't care about.
Of course the older people in the religion care deeply about the speeches, staring and listening at them immensely, but that's not the case for 95% of teenagers and kids.
1. The kingdom hall experience
Here's what you experience when coming to a kingdom hall:
- love bombing, JWs are taught how to be mannered and how to love bomb people around them to lead them to think the religion is a safe space.
- handshakes and introduction from 40 people, this is because every JW wants a piece of the pie of the newcomer.
- then sitting still for 2 hours with two 5 minute bathroom breaks.
You might think the speeches are atleast somewhat intresting but it's the same exact boring thing every single time. And mind you, you're coming there 2-3 days a week for your ENTIRE LIFE.
Basically it always starts with singing a song, some of them are directed to jehova and some are singing about the pride to be a JW. You're given little books with lyrics to all 300 songs available. Of course you're forced to sing them otherwise you're looked at with disgust.
After that comes a prayer. JW prayers aren't like Christianity, they're more 'real' so to speak, which isn't a bad thing. You're speaking directly to God as if he was another person. Instead of:
"Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread [...] Amen"
You get
"Dear Jehovah, Thank you for allowing us to gather at this assembly [...] In the name of Jesus Christ, amen"
They always have to be directed at jehovah directly, and have to be in the name of Jesus Christ.
After the prayer comes the monotonic speeches. A few people in order come up on the stage and speak.
They mainly speak about the daily watchtower.
Watchtower is a 'script' for speakers to talk about every time a meeting is held, for example the one from Sunday is found here:
The speakers will draw conclusions from these and talk about them 'deeply'. Of course it's never actually deep. It's always the same exact thing.
"This text is about how jehova loves us!"
"This text is about how to avoid being killed in Armageddon"
Etc.
They also love to take these Adobe Stock images, and ask the crowd what they see in them.
The speaker says, 'who'd like to speak on this image', You put up your hand, he goes "Brother Larry please", you get a microphone, and you speak
"Yes! This guy in the image is picking flowers, which is a reference to how Jehova picked us to be his humble witnesses!"
It basically always goes like that.
Then you do his on repeat for 2 hours, and you're done.
2. The rules / laws / commandments / whatever
JWs have rules that they must strictly follow, otherwise comes an inhumane punishment that we will talk about later. I will explain all the rules below from memory.
A) You must not have long hair as a man
Apparently according to JWs, nature teaches a man that long hair is a dishonor to him.
B) No traditional holidays
No christmas, no halloween, no easter, no new years. You don't even celebrate any day like independence days.
C) No birthdays
If you know anyone who was or is a JW, you'll know this.
Yes, kids are not allowed to hold birthdays, or partake in the birthdays of their friends. It's because it 'displeases god' and is 'worldly' for some reason.
D) No drugs
This one isn't too bad as a rule.
E) No premarital sex
Same as above.
F) No involvement in politics
JWs must not vote, discuss or partake in any political activity.
They must not salute, they must not honor flags or Emblem, they can't even wear uniforms or clothes with your countries flag on them.
They also can't sing the anthem, which for sure was a fun experience in school. I got bullied for it quite a lot.
G) 'Wordly' separation
JWs love to use the word 'wordly' and many people are confused on what it means.
It basically means outside the religion.
This rule states that you are heavily discouraged from associating yourself in anything worldly. Whether it means having friends outside the religion, or god forbid a partner.
It also means you can't join outside groups like boy scouts, red cross or alcoholic anonymous. Say goodbye to rehabilitation!
H) No gambling.
Self explanatory. It's seen as 'wordly' and destructive. Sin of greed or something.
I) LGBT is strictly forbidden

In the past 5 years, two rules (that i know of) were abolished.
One of them is having a beard. Yes, you heard it right. As a man you weren't allowed to have a beard for the past 80 years as a JW.
And second - the more outrageous one - was blood transfusion.
I already talked about this on another thread so i won't waste much energy on it again. But basically anything to do with blood was strictly forbidden as a JW. Whether it's consuming, donating or injecting blood, you weren't allowed to do this. This obviously meant that once you lost a lot of blood you're just dead. Thousands have died due to this so they abolished the rule saying the holy spirit told them it in a 'new light'.
3. Shunning and disfellowshipping
If you break any of the rules above, you get such a severe punishment that I'm suprised people still go along with it.
Disfellowshipping is the process of removing a specific person from the religion entirely. Your actions are deemed so unsavable that they are disgusted to have you in their kingdom hall.
Now this isn't too bad in enough itself, it's the shunning that comes with it.
Shunning is a rule that all JWs must strictly follow.
When a person is disfellowshipped, all contact with them is FORBIDDEN.
Even if they're your wife, children or parents. Even if you're a teenager.
Your parents are no longer allowed to talk to you. They aren't allowed to even look in your direction.
Imagine coming back from school, and your mom turns the other way when you come home.
It's disgusting. And i have experienced it.
I left the religion at around 15 years old. I came to the conclusion both myself and with help from friends and watching way too much anti-JW material.
I had a long talk with my dad, but my mom didn't care much because she wasn't born and raised JW (my dad converted her from Christianity)
Of course, once the announcement was made, i was no longer coming back to the kingdom halls, and my dad would refuse to speak with me.
At that point i didn't know what shunning was, as a kid you're not really taught that stuff, so i just thought that my dad was mad at me and apologized to him a lot without any response back.
Eventually he broke - i am his son after all. But that didn't mean he COULD talk with me. We had to literally hide it. We couldn't be seen in public for atleast half a year untill eventually people just stopped caring.
I have stable contact with my dad now but he's still a JW.
This is a completely inhumane practice that can literally drive a person insane.
There's adults who say they've lost their homes and gone homeless due to shunning. It's completely utterly batshit crazy.
4. The '144 000' situation
By the title I'm referring to what the JWs call "The Rulers".
According to their belief, God (or Jesus) handpicked 144000 random people to rule the earth alongside Jesus. Basically serving as his right hand men/women.
Of course this is all made up to make people feel special.
Upon asking someone how they know if someone is a part of the 144000, they respond "you just know", which is just schizophrenic to say the least. Apparently you're touched with faith and hear god speak to you!!
JWs hold an annual meeting which is the remembrance of jesus christ' death. During if they pass along a bread - jesus' body, and wine - jesus' blood.
But don't think you as a believer of 50 years are actually allowed to partake and taste it. You aren't allowed to 'take Jesus inside you'. You can only stare and the plates and pass it along.
Why? Because of course, only the 144000 schizophrenics are allowed to taste it! Yes! You literally come to the hall to get mogged by someone on stage who is destined to rule over the earth with Jesus.
Of course there's legit nothing stopping you from claiming you're one of them, atleast AFAIK. I'm not exactly sure what goes into it lol.
If you aren't one of the 144000, you're literally called 'other sheep'. Yes you end up in heaven but you aren't gods favorite, sorry buddy.
5. Fear mongering of armagedon

For JWs, there isn't hell or heaven. There is only earth.
But they do still believe in heaven, so how does it work?
Basically it's a belief that one day the day will come where Jesus will ride down on to earth and begin armagedon.
Armagedon will purge everyone who didn't accept jehova into their heart. Literally brutally killing them. Including all your loved ones.
Of course this is basically the same principle as hell, except you don't choose when it happens (aka at death, as 'afterlife'), instead it can happen any moment, so you better start being a JW ASAP if you don't want to die!
After the armagedon, all JWs will survive and all JWs that died in the past will be resurrected to live in heaven on earth - literally. Except the 144000 of course.
This is a DISGUSTING tactic of fear mongering, and i literally had panic attacks of it as a child. Whenever i had any impure thoughts I'd pray for 3 hours and cry because i didn't want to die in Armageddon. For all i knew it could come tommorow.
This is made to force people to stay in the religion if they want to live.
Of course there's many more fear mongering and bad imagery shown to children, but I'm too lazy to cover all of that right now
By now, we basically checked all ticks of this 'religion' to classify as a cult.
6. The other issues
There's many other issues that go into the religion that i will shortly discuss here.
If you thought it ends at being socially outcasted, fear mongered, fake and forcefully love bombed, sitting still for 8 hours and not being allowed to have ANY fun in your life, then you're wrong!
First of all, the people who are in charge of this cult are psychos. (the governing body)
They're alcoholics, many times caught on video drunk in stores buying more alcohol, so they literally don't follow their rules.
They prey on donations, and are extremely hungry for money. Obviously they don't actually believe anything in the religion, it's purely from greed.
They're narcissistic and dishonest, which is obvious because of how many times they change the entire RULES OF THE RELIGION if it benefits them money-wise
If you thought they allow blood transfusion now because of 'god telling them to do so', then you're wrong. It's simply because they were getting sued in every country possible so they had to compromise.

Second, JWs are taught to be the most.. what's the reverse of down to earth? up to the sky? Whatever, they're taught to be exactly that.
It's not like talking with real human beings. They're completely brainwashed from birth.
THEY'RE DELUSIONAL in every possible definition.
And of course i don't blame them for this. It's a sad thing and THEY'RE VICTIMS.
They're victims of their own religion. Victims of being love bombed and brainwashed their entire life.
My sister, after her faith stared wavering, got casually told "we all make mistakes but you need to start having faith in jehovas if you don't want to die in Armageddon"

I know i didn't talk much about my experience here but tbh there just isn't much to say. It was hell on earth, which is ironic since they promote heaven on earth so much.
I was beaten, I was shunned and was abused for going against Jehova.
I wish i got to have a normal childhood. I wish i got to have friends, i wish i got to play video games and watch 'worldly movies', i wish i got the pleasure of blowing out candles on my own birthday cake.
Unfortunately none of these things ever happened. Maybe that's the reason I'm so dependant on online friendships now.
