I found out today that my ex is single again, and honestly it caught me completely off guard.

We broke up about a year ago after I fucked things up pretty badly. I was in a very unstable place mentally at the time and handled the breakup terribly. A few months later I even made the extremely stupid decision to pretend to be another girl so I could talk to her again.

Things got even worse later during a mental health crisis. I spammed her with messages/calls and said some things about killing myself. I take full responsibility for that. It wasn’t fair to her and I understand why she would want nothing to do with me.

Since then I’ve completely stopped contacting her or anyone around her. It’s been months of total no contact.

I’ve also spent that time getting my own life back together. I’m doing much better mentally, I’m sticking to treatment, I got my driver’s license, bought a car, and I’m going back to university in September after taking some time away.

And then today I find out she’s single again.

My first reaction was basically:

“Holy shit.”

Not gonna lie, part of me immediately started wondering whether this could somehow mean something.

But realistically, I know that her being single doesn’t mean she wants me back, and I’m not planning on suddenly appearing in her DMs or trying to manipulate the situation.

I’m mostly curious how other people would approach this.

If you were in my position, would you:

A) Completely forget about it and keep moving forward.

B) Leave the door open but make absolutely no move unless she contacts you first.

C) At some point, assuming you’re genuinely stable and enough time has passed, consider reaching out once and accepting whatever response you get.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who’ve been through a breakup where they seriously fucked things up and later genuinely changed.

What would you do?
