My experience with accutane

For a long time, I struggled with very severe acne. I tried everything I could, skincare routines, cutting out sugar, and even antibiotics but nothing worked.
Thats when my dermatologist suggested Accutane.

Before we started the therapy, my doctor warned me of the side effects of accutan. The therapy (I took accutan in pills) would completely dry out my face, for example lips, inside your mouth, mucous membrance and in general your whole skin. I took one pill per day for half a year. And in addition I was not allowed to drink any energys or alcohol. Also its not recommended to spend much time in the sun, because a sunburn can slow down the effect of the pills. Hard sport ist also bad combined with the pills. It can cause cramps.

We started with a low dose (10mg per day), just to look, how my body would react on it. And I have to say that the side effects weren´t that bad how the doctor told me. That´s why we increased the dose to 20mg per day and that´s where I noticed the side effects of the pills and it was extreme. But that´s what you need to live with.

Additionally to the pills, I used a creme for my face called "epiduo forte" every evening.
Epiduo Forte is a prescription cream used to treat acne.
It contains adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, which unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and kill acne-causing bacteria.
With regular use, it helps clear existing pimples and prevents new breakouts over time.

Finally I want to tell you about the things you can do against the side effects:
1. Do not shower to hot
2. Wash your face every morning & evening with a washing creme
3. Use a moisturizing creme every morning
4. Always put on sunscreen in summer and avoid direct contact with the sun
5. For dry lips, just use vaseline or something like that

(At the pictures you can see a before & after comparison and the visible dry lips)

Your side effects were so bad because you were using isotretinoin + adapalene + benzyol peroxide.
Benzyol peroxide with isotret is a big no no.

Yeah, benzoyl peroxide is overly irritating and unnecessary when isotretinoin already does the work.

I was deeply depressed during accutane, I left it the instant my skin got better and kept going with a simpler skincare routine with adapalene, I don't hate accutane, it did work but I doubt it is worth unless you had severe acne to begin with.

Can't you just hop on antidepressants if that's the case?

why would I do that if there are already other active alternatives I can choose from? Also, I explained myself incorrectly. I wasn't "depressed" but I had a completely uncontrolable mood change. I was extremely happy one hour, the next extremely depressed. Instead of getting annoyed I would get extremely mad. It was erratic and very hard to manage.
