It's very cheap, a 1kg can of meat sold as cat/dog food is like $1-1.5 in my country. I remember reading in a newspaper a long time ago, about Romanian immigrants who went to work in UK, and they would eat canned dog food because it was the cheapest meat they could afford.
Now, we have Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants who come to Romania to work and they too eat our dog food to save money.

Well, when pet food first appeared in Romania it was actually pretty expensive and no one bought it. I mean who in there right mind would spend money on separate food for their dog or cat, it was simply a ridiculous idea, all pets were fed scraps and leftovers from meals, it was the traditional way.
It took years of marketing and propaganda from the pet food companies until they finally convinced and brainwashed people that feeding normal food to pets is kinda dangerous/unhealthy and the sales for pet food finally took off. The prices also decreased so now canned meat sold as dog food is cheaper than regular canned meat.
Something similar happened with bottled water. Back in my time, there was no such thing, who the hell would pay for water in a bottle when you have free tap water everywhere??? I remember some kid who traveled throughout Europe in a tour with a traditional dance team and told us some pretty amazing stories about life in western Europe. He stayed in hotels along with other dance teams from other countries, and noticed they all bought bottled water to drink it. All the Romanians filled their bottles from the faucets in their hotel rooms and couldn't believe how idiots the other guys were for spending their money on water. Anyway...after many years of marketing, bottled water became a thing too in Romania and people buy it now like it's no big deal.
It's pretty amazing how marketing can convince people to buy things they don't really need.
