I heard somewhere that the gas you get through a stove doesn't have any natural odor. The odor is fused in it artificially by the gas providers, so that people can come to realize/notice whether there is any gas leakage or not. Interesting stuff.

That being said, just turn the stove off when you see it open. It is better to live and not die while complaining cause the stove was on.
