I had comissioned a custom Chesterfield sofa made from real wood and real leather made for my parents house. Hoping it would make them happy. Their current sofa is nearly 10 years old and creaks whenever someone sits on it.

I reached out to a well-known woodworks shop in their city. Showed them these pics and paid an advance of β‚Ή60,000 (around $800) to get the process started and then go my parents house to have them take the measurements

My dad was at home when the carpenter came by. He asked how much I had paid, and when he heard the amount, he got upset. He called me and scolded me for being careless with money, saying, β€œTwo lakhs($2500) for a sofa? Are you out of your mind? Do you think money grows on trees or what?”

I tried to explain that quality craftsmanship comes at a price and that the current sofa needs a replacement but he wouldn't listen. He told me to cancel the order. He also told me I need to learn budgeting and control my spending habits. Theh getting out of control. He told me I have 0 impulse control. I just wanted to be nice wtf

from my experience there's a lot of survivorship bias when it comes to paying extra for stuff. You only really remember the times when you paid extra for something and it still works fine a like a decade later and forget the majority of times where its not clear that you even gained anything from paying more.

W dad. Not for the shouting, but not wasting money on unnecessary "luxury" items is a good habit to teach your kids

2 lakh from an Indian perspective is a lot tbh (specially if you’re middle class) but they should understand you’re earning in USD and it’s pretty standard for a sofa here (most decent ones are at least 800)

Sounds exactly like my parents. If I did anything nice or buy them something they'd always say I'm wasting money. The mentality was save! save! save!

I don't come from a rich background like you. My parents were literally underclass. They drilled into me a frugal, non-materialistic mentality. Ngl its worked. I don't like buying things that are not necessary, even if I could comfortably buy them. I'm stingy AF. I'd fret over buying a can of coke for Β£1 even though I can comfortably afford it.

ur intention was genuine and nice. Wanting to gift ur parents a high-quality, custom-made sofa shows how much u care about their comfort and happiness.

I understand ur dad’s concerns about money and budgeting, especially on expensive items like this. What might seem like a thoughtful gift to u could feel like a unnecessary expense to them. ur dad is just looking out for u with ur money spending habits.

maybe explain to ur parents not just the cost but also the meaning behind the gift the craftsmanship, quality, and that u wanted to give them something special that would last. Showing that it’s not just an impulse buy ut a thoughtful gesture for ur parents.

did ur parents even know that the sofa was a gift for them?

Maybe this could be a good opportunity to have a calm conversation where u share not just the cost but also the meaning behind the giftβ€”the craftsmanship, quality, and that u wanted to give them something special that would last. Showing that it’s not just an impulse buy but a thoughtful gesture for ur parents.

Out of all the things you could treat them to with your money and you chose a sofa :lul:
You could've bought your parents a holiday or something
