I think the best way to guarantee the best results should be a mix of 1 and 2, women can choose but in restricted pool of men, otherwise it creates too much problems.

I was mostly talking about cavemen, not early agricultural communities where the 17:1 applies. Cavemen did face more natural selection as they were the ones who had to hunt dangerous animals that could kill and maim them while women just collected berries. Men also are more careless and do crazier shit that could get them killed while women tend to be more careful. Child mortality and disease also disproportionately impacts men compared to women. Also if there were any threats to the tribe it was largely the men who had to face it. Also, I guess I counted intraspecific competition as a type of natural selection.
