And the aftermath of the invasion, what they will do with Ukraine, if they will divide it, fully conquer it, or something else. I struggle to see Putin’s thinking or what gains he might see in this. Or how the world after a potential invasion might be, how China might react, etc.

Putin is motivated by the fact that if Ukraine joins the West militarily, NATO forces will be right next to the Russian heartland. It would be like 1962 Cuba misille crisis but in reverse, now America moving in next to Russia’s immediate neighbour

On the other hand if Russia gets Ukraine, they would do the same to Europe’s heartland.

The only legit solution would be keeping Ukraine as a neutral puffer zone between NATO and Russia

Escalation of the conflict is against both sides’ interest. If Russia invades Ukraine, Sweden and Finland will join NATO while Poland will be in existential danger due to the new borders.

While if NATO expands further into east, Russia will be in existential danger and Putin have already made it clear that Russia won’t tolerate that

Also, when's the last time any of the NATO countries (mainly the US) attacked a country that was actually capable of fighting back in any meaningful way? You'd have to go back to the Japanese in WW2 and NATO didn't even exist back then.
Even if Russia decides to invade Ukraine, NATO will not go to war with Russia because they did fuck all when Russia invaded Crimea back in 2014.
