Around here natural gas is scented to smell like rotten eggs so it's easily recognizable. Never heard of it smelling like alcohol.

I'm sure you're not a car guy or into any kind of mechanical stuff but if you used brake cleaner/ carb cleaner when working on machinery in the basement that smell is potent af and will usually drown out most else. My mom gets mad as hell anytime she smells that and she smells it even hours after I used it when repairing stuff. Other automotive chemicals will do the same thing like if you mixed up some 2 cycle oil into gasoline to run small engines

My mom doesn't like the smell but usually isn't too mad because she knows the only reason the smell is there is because I fixed something myself instead of wasting money having someone else do it. Some of my small machines are 30+ years old and still going because I maintain and fix them myself instead of just wasting money on something new when the old stuff is repairable. But alas for you it's not something normal for you so your parents would get more confused and mad about that smell than knowing you had people over drinking lol. Not too long ago I had a small engine apart on the workbench and replaced the blown connecting rod instead of replacing the engine or junking the machine and bringing life into old stuff can feel nice along with saving money
