My youngest daughter is 19, she has a group of guy friends who she adores. Her boyfriend is friends with one of the guys she hangs out with. These young men show up for my kid all the time. Recently my kid was stressed about her college paperwork and one of the guys made her shortbread cookies. These relationships are crucial for her and for the group of young men she has been dear friends with since 7th grade. All of them have battled a form of mental illness through the years (one of the kids’ mom was very ill while battling breast cancer). They fish up at the cabin together and look out for each other. Friends are precious and friendships with people who are not just like ourselves makes us more adept at handling life’s inevitable hardships. Hoping my kid is just how all of us will be in the future: less focused on a person’s gender and more focused on a person’s essential humanity.
