The creation National Socialism as an ideology is commonly credited to Adolf Hitler, a political activist from Austria who during his stay in a German prison published the book "Mein Kampf". This book is widely considered the origin of National Socialism.
As for the ideology itself National Socialism is a branch of Fascism which defines the nation by a race which is then (following Fascism's nationalistic approach) considered superior to other races.
In history there have been many occurances of National Socialism as a leading ideology for the nation but the by far most noticeable example was the Third German Realm which between 1933 and 1945 was led by a national socialist party called "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei" (NSDAP) or the "National-Socialist German Worker's Party".
This instance of National Socialism had the German nation as focus and considered the people of the "aryan" race to be the nation.
In the German instance there was also a sort of racial hierarchy which is not commonly seen in later examples of national socialism that saw aryans (especially the nordics) as superior or "ubermensch", slavics, romanis and most other groups as under-human or "untermensch" and semites as parasites.

TLDNR: National Socialism is a branch of fascism where the nation is defined by race.
