Attraction happens within a split second; it takes a girl less than a second to know that she won't fuck you. However, there may be occasions when you are sent a mixed signal. Such is the "near IOI" (or "almost IOI" or just "fake IOI"). That's when a girl looks at you with a minimal spark of interest, then turns off and moves on as if you've suddenly vanished. This happens when one is initially taken to be potentially attractive, but on further "reflection" by the girl's lizard brain is deemed not attractive enough.
Thus for example, you may be athletic and Chadfaced and dressed cool and so on, but still a 5'7 manlet, so for the first half of a second, the girl is curious about you, and then in the second half of that second, she shirks away, realizing that you aren't even taller than her. (Or the converse case, you may spark her interest because tallfag, but then she notices that your face is a disgusting, asymmetrical mess and turns away. This all happens, for the most part, on the subconscious level)
What you get in such situations is not a legit IOI, but a fake one. In a legit IOI, she is interested initially and then continues to be interested, even if she looks away and does the coy play that girls are so fond of. Whereas, if you're a 4.5 PSL or worse, you may be given the very the beginning of an IOI, only for it to turn to nothing, because as soon as she scrutinizes you more closely, she instinctively figures that no, you aren't worth her attention. My theory is that some spergs believe that they get "plenty of IOIs," when in fact they only get near/fake IOIs, because what makes the girl look away (and move on) is not her acting coy, but her subconscious, split-second realizing that one is below her standards.
Telling a legit IOI from a near/fake IOI requires a nuanced ability to read body language, which spergs lack, so they end up believing themselves to be more attractive than they actually are based on these mixed signals.
