Im 15 and have had extremely dry lips for like 5 years and i use vaseline about once an hour but whenever i dont use it my lips become visibly dry and start flaking after about 10 minutes of no vaseline and whenever i lick them they dry out so much that people at school ask what is wrong with me. Also if i run out of vaseline for whatever reason (even for one day) they become so dry that whenever i open my mouth to eat they split and start to bleed.

Can someone please recommend anything i can do to fix this its even physically painfull sometimes

I have some prescribed hydrocortisone moisturiser because i used to have severe eczema when i was younger, will this do the same as the creams. And also my mum said it was a steroid cream and it thins your skin so dont use it all the time and only for flare ups

yeah corticosteroids can thin skin but hydrocortisone is weak so for skin thinning to happen you would need to use hydrocortisone daily for months (may u rep me now) i think occasionally is fine

Steroid creams should not be applied daily, that's not what they're intended for.

hydrocortisone is mild, but a cream like betamethasone or clobetasol is much stronger.

Any region with high risk such as the face, eyelids, groin, armpits, basically anywhere with high absorption is high risk.

For a flare up a thin layer once or maybe twice max daily UNTIL the problem settles, then stop and taper depending on medical advice.

For your dry lips, in general just avoid flavoured balms, no “tingly” balms, no scrubs, no lip plumpers, no scented products. Stop licking your lips, that is probably one of the main problems keeping this alive.

Talk to a GP about:
chronic cheilitis
dermatitis from licking lips
atopic/contact cheilitis
angular cheilitis
whether you need a short steroid course, antifungal, antibiotic, or allergy/patch testing
