Nowadays, you’re neurotypical if you participate in normie and mainstream behavior. If you’re anything outside of that you’re non-NT. Just 20 years ago, neurotypical encompassed all sorts of subgroups that people could join. The video game nerds had a group, the stoners had a group, the goths had a group, the film heads had a group, the weirdos and outcasts all had groups. But nowadays. For whatever reason, these more nuanced subgroups don’t exist. Or if they do they exist on a superficial level through the lens of NT. If anyone tries to dig deeper and have more nuanced conversations, they’re immediately detected as non-NT.
Hell look at anime. Anime used to be for nerds. People who liked it went to anime conventions and clubs to meet like minded people to discuss deeper themes and nuanced anime. But these groups nowadays are invaded by normies. So much so that the real anime heads are non-NT when trying to take part even though 20 years ago it’d be a majority presence of anime heads
The conclusion is that there just isn’t any real safe space for people with more nuanced views. Everything has been invaded by NT normies who use these groups as a means to build their social circles without really caring much about the underlying topic
Another conclusion is that people are just less nuanced in general. Media is largely the same without allowing people to find their own interest. It’s like world of Warcraft. Initially you could build out your talent tree which gave some autonomy to the player. But now everything is pre-selected. D2 vs D3 is a better analogy
