It's historically significant, at least for the west. Most western countries derive their heritage from Catholicism, especially old Spanish and French colonies where now hundreds of millions of Catholics live. The pope is the direct religious leader derived from the time of Jesus, so st. Peter, a direct apostle of Jesus who at first denied his holiness, so not only Catholics will care, but other denominations of Christianity as well. In the west, even if people indirectly don't believe in God, most people see the Pope as the closest thing to God. The Pope is highly respected, even among the non-religious.
