this seems extremely dystopian to me, it reminds me of the movie gattaca. sure this isn't anything revolutionary, yet. but this is how all things start out and it keeps barrelling down and snowballing until you can individually edit every single gene in an embryo. we're seeing this with ai right now, a few years ago it looked horrible and easily distinguishable now its almost like real photos and can get hard to discern whats real and whats not real.

not only the fact that you're basically creating a society of ubermenchs and untermenchs, dividing the split even more than it is now. you're playing god. you're disrupting the natural flow of life and how there naturally is genetic variance. everyone will want a 6'5 a10 mogger as their child. which then runs into the issue that this is only affordable to the rich, the elites and millionaires will have this easily accessible further dividing the rift. literally creating a dystopian society in the future where the untermenchs slave away until they die and the ubermenschs live lasciviously above the slaves.

maybe im schizo and overreacting but this scares tf out of me, especially as someone already treated badly by society. i cant imagine a future where this will be the norm, most of the people alive right now would essentially be put into the untermensch category.

my point is more so that there's going to be a rift of ubermenchs and untermenschs, because the rich will most likely only be able to access the highest degree to it

@scrunchables what are you laughing about, this is a serious matter

This shit is a scam and it is extremely obvious once you begin to understand the nuance behind heritability as a statistical term.

even if it is a scam, this kind of technology will inevitably become the norm among the rich. i dont know what nuance is behind it because genes obviously control an extremely large portion of your life

Polygenic embryo screening is still in such an early phase that using it to try to form anything even remotely close to a deterministic prediction about an embryo's future traits (especially a trait as complex as cognitive ability, which we use IQ to measure) is retarded. If a huge number of families started using this (which we know isn't gonna happen with how expensive it is), the only thing that might happen is an increase of 2-3 IQ points in the population of lab babies, for instance. But when you consider that the standard error of measurement for modern IQ tests is 3-5 points, this increase (at the personal level) would hardly amount to anything.

Heritability doesn't mean “X% of your IQ/height is caused by genes.” Let's say height in a given population has 80% heritability; what that basically means is that in this specific group of people living in that specific range of environments, about 80% of variation between those people can be statistically attributed to genetic differences.

I feel like this form of eugenics is gonna take so long to become reliable that other far more easily accessible methods of improving certain traits will be out before then.

You don't need to stress about it
Nobody is going to be 7 foot mogger anytime soon
