Something most people dont realize is the function of growth plates for bone development. A common misconception is that cartilage turns into bone and rhats what creates lengthening.

The truth is you always have cartilage in your legs till the day you die. What cartilage actually is, is a template for bone growth. Your bone grows over this template to prevent deformities, overgrowth, and assymetrical growth. So technically you can grow anytime regardless of whether your plates are closed or not the only issue is we dont have a way of triggering bone growth like we did during puberty. The key is triggering controlled growth rather than growth itself

For example when you look at leg lengthening. There isnt any growth plates involved at all. What happens is your body triggers bone growth at the ends of your bone because it senses the gap as a fracture without you needing to still be naturally growing.

TRIGGERING IS KEY!!!!!
