Going to the police did not help the Austrian either: “The policeman who was present did not take me seriously. He asked me if I was behind it to let off steam behind my girlfriend's back. It was a cheek! I was also told that I should have expected it if I posted my pictures! »

That’s what it’s about

  • Paul (28) discovers various profiles on Tinder where a fraudster uses his pictures to get women around.
  • With the help of a friend, he finds out the fraudster's phone number, but that doesn't help.
  • The ö Austrian police is not a big help. Paul is not taken seriously.
  • In Switzerland, taking legal action in such a case is also difficult: The criminal offense of identity theft is not listed in the Swiss Criminal Code.
The Austrian Paul (28) is actually in a happy relationship. That's what he thinks, and so does his girlfriend. But in his environment, the image of the intact-looking relationship slowly begins to crumble - without any action on his part.

" Lukas (29) " and " Andreas (29) " are to blame for this . The men have one thing in common: They all smile mischievously at the camera and appear on the cell phone displays of women looking for dates on Tinder. But Lukas and Andreas are fake. Their profiles are adorned with photos of Paul. "When I saw myself on Tinder, I thought I was crazy!" Says the 28-year-old.

« The police didn't take me seriously! »

It all started in April 2020 when Paul received a Facebook message from a stranger: “ I suspect that someone is misusing your name and photos for their Tinder profile. This someone writes in a pretty low-level way. I just want you to know. “ He fell from the clouds. “ Some pervert uses my photos to turn on women on Tinder. He wants to get photos and explicit messages to get excited - that's tough ! »says Paul. He and his friends reported the profile to Tinder and it was gone about as quickly as it appeared. But the relief was short-lived, because soon a new profile appeared with different photos of Paul and a different name. Again the stranger with Paul's face was hunting women.
More and more people around him saw the profile on Tinder, but many knew that it wasn't Paul. One of them was a fellow student who wrote to alleged Paul on Tinder (see picture) and got the fraudster's phone number. But the stranger never answered the phone, no matter how many times Paul tried. He also reported this Tinder profile. « But that cannot be the solution. It is very easy to open a new profile again and again. A deletion does not help. »

Paul went to the police, wanted to report the unknown fraudster. But the police officer present did not take him seriously. “He asked me if I wasn't behind it myself and wanted to let off steam behind my girlfriend's back. I was also told that I should have expected it when I posted my pictures, ” the 28-year-old recalls.

There is a reason that his profiles are public: “ I'm a journalist, it's my job to be open. If I hide, I'm doing something wrong. “ The policeman saw it differently. As long as nothing worse than an act of violence or fraud happens, the act is not criminally relevant, Paul learns. « I was just disappointed and felt left alone. The laws hardly allow anything. Knowing that this pervert's hustle and bustle cannot be stopped is frustrating . "

« Who wants to see me on the ground? And why? »

The police were able to determine a name based on the fraudster's phone number, but it doesn't get Paul anywhere. " It's a very common name, like Max Mustermann." He worries: “ Who knows what this guy will do with my pictures. What reputation results from that for me. Every day I ask myself if there is someone behind it who wants something bad for me. I went inside myself, thought about it. Is it revenge? Or jealousy? Is it maybe even someone from your own circle of friends? Who wants to see me on the ground and in all m why? »
But Paul is not the only one suffering from the unknown. His girlfriend has a difficult period as the Aus e rreicher says: " It was very stressful. Although it has never doubted me, but still, the image was outwardly now times the that I am unfaithful. “ Still, it didn't hurt the four-year relationship. « It made us stronger because we know that we love each other and are always there for one another! »

" I'm still afraid that he will open another profile "

“It's actually sad and poor. The fraudsters are probably people who try to slip into another person online in their dark little room in order to forget their own complexes - they must be helped. »
In the last few months it seems to have become quiet. No Andreas, no Lukas, who are up to mischief on Tinder. Still, Paul is worried: “ In the back of my mind, I'm still afraid that he will open a profile again. I hope that the police have now taken action and made contact with the guy. Theoretically he could send nude pictures or worse, urging women to at this very moment, he who to send with ih m to meet. And that with my pictures! »
