The Charlotte County Sheriffโ€™s Office is currently working an investigation on Sandy Pine Road in Punta Gorda, which included a deadly officer-involved shooting.

According to Sheriff Bill Prummell, deputies responded to a residence shortly after noon on Wednesday in reference to a disturbance between two men. Deputies determined the incident to be a civil matter.

The homeowner reportedly wanted the other man off of his property. Deputies discovered, however, the homeowner had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear on a trespassing charge.

When they tried to arrest the man, he resisted. Deputies tried detaining him for approximately 20 minutes.

Deputies attempted to use tasers and pepper spray several times with no effect. Three deputies went โ€œhands onโ€ with him at one point and he โ€œthrew them off of him like they were ragdolls,โ€ Sheriff Prummell said.

A deputy pulled out a shotgun that shoots beanbag rounds and the man was shot with the beanbag rounds several times, again with no effect.

The man eventually charged one of the deputies and that is when the deputy pulled his weapon and fatally shot him.

The man has been identified as 42-year-old Elroy Clarke.

People who knew man killed by deputies were surprised he provoked use-of-force

Sheriff Bill Prummell said a deputy even used a 'less-lethal shotgun' with bean bag rounds to stop Clarke, but it didnโ€™t work either.

One friend FOX 4 spoke with said "he was a family man" had several kids and didn't have that demeanor.

Shooting in the leg isnt safe like they show in the movies. The femoral artery, one of the body's largest blood vessels runs through the thigh and can lead to massive blood loss if hit. You can easily kill someone by shooting them.in the legs @FaceandBBC @Panzram
