It would lead to the destruction of civilization.

"oh you killed this person"

"yeah its not my fault its cause of my genetics and upbringing"

And then thats that.

We have to hold people accountable and see free will as something that exists.

It's important we imprison for deterrence though. If you live in an environment where you'll get fucked if you kill someone your not gonna do it

In your example you don't need to believe in free will either. That person will still go to prison, and also knows that fact before he commits the crime. Which for most people is enough of a reason to not do it. Their brains try to optimize for their own happiness. Going to prison isn't the ideal scenario, so they won't go down that route.

How could it not be true? Scientifically?

It's obviously factually correct, there are no other factors, besides enviroment, genetics, and upbringing

Nothing else can shape a person's mind besides those things

But it's not worth applying day to day, even if you don't have free will technically, you still feel like you're making the choices, and you are, so it doesn't really matter for you and me, and yeah bad criminals, even as a result of their circumstances still need to be punished as it adds a further set of environmental factors to illicit a change in behavior.

Current society holds the value that if you can't be hold accountable you will be punished less though.

A drunk person who kills someone will be punished less. Even though he knew potentially he would cause trouble if he drinks alcohol.

Anyone who spews this nonsense has clearly given up on life or is a progressive liberal abomination (most likely a christcuck too) who likes to be humiliated and stepped on

Determinism pill is definitely brutal

That makes sense as well imo You don't need to assume free will for that either.

One of the main goals of a society is to hammer their laws into your brain such that whatever decision you make, you always consider if it's legal or not. And that decision making process requires you to be mentally capable. You can't be on drugs or mentally disabled. Punishing drunk people the same way as a sober one would be unfair because the drunk person doesn't have access to all his mental capabilities.

The brain is like an algorithm or a machine that always tries to find the best solution (for yourself). People get punished in a society, if this decision making system is too egoistic and doesn't consider the whole community. When a judge realizes that a person actually has this set of rules in his brain, but just wasn't able to make a rational decision because he was intoxicated, then he might have to give him a lesser punishment.

There might be more to it like moral values and maybe even some form of free will. All I'm saying is that in the example of a drunk person committing a crime it still makes sense to punish him less (depending on the exact circumstances).

You can still "hold people accountable" without thinking free will exists
