I’m on day 19 of my no shampoo journey. My scalp is getting super itchy. I have dry dandruff (tiny white flakes caused by dry scalp) but yesterday i saw a big chunk of dandruff in my hair.

The chunk wasn’t yellow, so I suppose it’s not a fungus and just oily dandruff caused by more oil production in my scalp???

What do I do? I think I will first oil my scalp with smth like olive oil and rinse it out and see how my scalp reacts to that. It’s really bad vro I have white flakes everywhere…

I tried no shampoo, the longest I went was 2 weeks before I felt like ripping my hair off

Even if I use nizoral 2 days later I get more dandruff

and my hair has gotten thinner

I have no idea what to do

Yeah at the beginning it’s normal, just your scalp producing more oil than it can handle but your body adapts eventually

No shampoo is genuinely useless. As long as you only shampoo every 2/3 days using a decent brand and not a huge amount of product you will be fine.

I still don't recommend being on no shampoo.

When I was on that routine I used something called a Boar Bristle Brush (BBB)
1000017909

The idea is, you can get rid of some grease in your hair through mechanical cleansing via BBB. There's more indepth info about it on reddit (r/nopoo)

Hard water is also a factor. Its basically just water with a lot of mineral density that bind to your hair and make it look and feel like shit. You need a shower filter if this is the case.

Also there's a lot of trade offs to being on no shampoo. In most hair products, they have something called silicones (e.g dimethicone). These silicones build up in your hair and weigh it down. Making your hair flat, and difficult to style.

Usually this is not a big problem if you have a normal routine with shampoo because shampoo (especially sulfates) are the only thing that can remove this buildup. Many silicones can't get rinsed out by water alone because they're inherently hydrophobic.

This also means you can't heat style your hair because you don't use heat protectant spray. If you try to blowdry your hair or use a hot iron without a heat protectant, you'll end up damaging it and making it frizzy overtime.

You also can't use basically any common styling products like pomade, mousse, clay, hair hold sprays (Meaning there's barely any option for you to lock in any hairstyles you do).

Anything natural or water-based is almost always going to be vastly inferior. Even sea salt spray needs hair spray or clay for hold.

Only thing you could use is maybe Hair Texture & Volumizing powders since they can work standalone. But even then, you're limiting the number of hairstyles you can do.

Even if you manage to keep your hair extremely clean on this routine people could still say it smells. Hair isn't odorless naturally, and since you're not on shampoo it won't have any perfume to enhance its scent.

I did about 8 months of no shampoo and it got me nowhere. I kept seeing the same thing over and over "it gets better bro". It never did until I quit.

Yeah. The logic behind why people do it is that they think shampoo is unnatural. And it is, but not using it is just as unnatural. I think people believe that, because in ancient times people did not have something like shampoo, it must be that our body naturally keeps our hair clean. But I feel like making a theory on such baseless assumptions is kinda dumb. We don't really know how people behaved in the past. Probably they would spend a lot of time manually cleaning any filth from their hair. Shampoo is the best practical solution we have and it's really not harmful if used reasonably

Very surface level temporary moisturization. The protein molecules are too large to penetrate the hairshaft, that's what hydrolyzed collagen does.

its worth it, but u need something other than a shampoo to clean it like Gram Flour/Chickpea Flour/raw egg yolk or something. Just cope !

Heres, my hair I don't use shampoo much like may be once every two months or so if I feel like my scalp needs a wash I would use some sort of Hair sealant first (I use coconut oil, castor oil, mustard oil) but u need to just experiment with yourself. I have good hair genetics, which help me alot. After a certain amount of time, your scalp starts to adapt to the environment you create for it, doesn't matter if u have a oily or dry scalp. Do your own research and see what works for you. See what works for you, if ur scalp burns or irritate just use shampoo, find something else to cope with. Anyways, gl and stay :NiceTry:.

Shampoo absolutely rapes the health of my hair
Im on day 20 now and my hair is a lot more wind resistant, in the past one blow of wind would absolutely destroy my wavy hair but now its stronger and doesnt really get frizzy, it gets volumous but barely frizzy

We have very different hair types. I have 2b-2c hair and i style it like curly hair, broccoli like hairstyles. When I use shampoo my scalp gets super super dry, and in general is dry and my hair is very very frizzy. As you know i get a lot of dry dandruff caused by a dry scalp.
So no shampoo should help my scalp produce more oils
Hard water is also a factor. Its basically just water with a lot of mineral density that bind to your hair and make it look and feel like shit. You need a shower filter if this is the case.
Wtf please elaborate on that, i think this can save my hair. Because I once was somewhere where the altitude was around 2500m of altitude (8 202 ft) and i was there for one weak and everytime after showering my hair looked so goooooood, i always thought that it was the towel there but now since you said that its the water, then it could be the water let me look up.
Okay yes u were fucking right chatgpt just confirmed that the place were i was probably has soft water to middle soft water :love::love:
what can i do to make the minerals go away in my shower water???

Exactly, but silicone free shampoo also exists
Usually this is not a big problem if you have a normal routine with shampoo because shampoo (especially sulfates) are the only thing that can remove this buildup. Many silicones can't get rinsed out by water alone because they're inherently hydrophobic.
Doesnt make that much sense since most shampoos contain silicone :feelskek: so they remove the old silicones and give you knew ones, but sulfates are also pretty harsh with your hair as far as i know right?
This also means you can't heat style your hair because you don't use heat protectant spray. If you try to blowdry your hair or use a hot iron without a heat protectant, you'll end up damaging it and making it frizzy overtime.
I dont get that, but yeah when i blow dry then my waves/curls get destroyed and my hair is frizzy i always need to air dry
You also can't use basically any common styling products like pomade, mousse, clay, hair hold sprays (Meaning there's barely any option for you to lock in any hairstyles you do).
I use this one
1778925641165
with this my hair looks pretty good, without it i look homeless. its funny cuz without it ppl would cut their hair shorter but i keep it long cuz with it i get super good hair curls

Anything natural or water-based is almost always going to be vastly inferior. Even sea salt spray needs hair spray or clay for hold.
okay
Only thing you could use is maybe Hair Texture & Volumizing powders since they can work standalone. But even then, you're limiting the number of hairstyles you can do.
no need curl manifesto from kerastase is enough
Even if you manage to keep your hair extremely clean on this routine people could still say it smells. Hair isn't odorless naturally, and since you're not on shampoo it won't have any perfume to enhance its scent.
Yeah but wont really happen

My scalp got very itchy these days and a shit ton of dry dandruff, i started getting a little bit of oily dandruff to, i think.
I used olive oil on my hair yesterday cuz of my dry scalp

i dont shower with hot water and i only keep my hair under the water for a short period of time when showering then after i use oil and moisturiosor on my scalp. im going to keep doing this untill my scalp is no longer dry
I shower with hot water but I try to not let my hair get in contact with it, I only use cold water when rinsing it out.

Do you think that the hot air and obviously some hot water will get on my hair but like 2 ml of water, nothing big, will that affect my hair negatively and completely using cold water is the only solution????
@Kara

Sometimes i used a conditioner but currently on my jorney im only using water for my hair and every morning i use cold water on my hair and then i put this in my hair

its some sort of leave in conditioner that works wonderfully

Ok but see, you do still use something. Just water and our organism aren't enough to keep it clean

Had the same problem and Shampoo would make it worse.

I used Ketozolin 5% + Aloe Vera at the edges and it worked INSTANTLY.

I went from snowing on the school table to not even getting any flakes on my black shirts:feelsez:

U don't need any shampoo for that...

for your "dandruff" which is most likely a dry scalp, if it isnt yellow. But jojoba oil is like the best oil to help with dry scalp
Yes i have dry dandruff
only one day ago i saw a big chunk but the chunk was white so i suppose its not the fungus type of dandruff
@eyezen also recommended me argan oil what about that one?
