Men always prioritized looks, especially when it comes to relationships/marriage where heavy investment, effort and full commitment is expected. Even the betabuxx stereotype is based on this exact thing. For example, the mediocre looking surgeon with his younger much hotter trophy wife. Very successful men have much hotter wives compared to themselves, unless they got with her early before they made it big. Only wokesters preached this "personality, IQ, education, success in a woman is more important than looks" crap, in reality those things rarely if ever tip the scales to a woman's favor. Going for the hottest woman only starts to having diminishing returns when the woman is already very attractive, for example let's say 8+. At that level, I might agree that other traits start making a bigger difference compared to disregarding them just to get a more attractive woman. But let's be honest, the overwhelming majority of guys, statistically, will never have the option to pick between an 8 and a 9, so the whole diminishing returns thing doesn't matter.

It's the constraint of choice that limits them. See, the average guy will date a mtb, because that's the best he can get. He can, hypothetically, liquidate all his positive traits and turn them into "mating currency". and he'll still not be able to afford a hotter woman, because looks are by far the most expensive trait to secure in a partner. So essentially, he is stuck with mtbs, and well, between a ballbusting mtb with a bad personality and a more reasonable mtb with ok personality, of course he goes for the latter. Besides the extremely rare cases where extreme luck is involved, the only way to secure a much hotter partner is to have significant amounts of social and financial capital and leverage it. Most men will never achieve that, and most of the ones who achieve it, will already be paired up and heavily invested in the woman by then(marriage, kids etc.) and won't be able to capitalize on it due to the fact that significant success comes much later in life.

Look at most guys, who say "I've dated a lot of hotties and models in my youth, but I chose an average looking woman with great personality and high IQ for a wife", they actually didn't even get a sniff of an actual hot woman, let alone dated many of them. Of course you only need to take a look at the guy to realize that - some average looking oldcel that makes average wage. Of course he never did.

That's why when it comes to relationships, for example, a man who is more or less at the 50th percentile of male attractiveness will generally end up with a woman that is more or less at the 50th percentile of female attractiveness and vice versa.
