Notice how some people act so tough and condescending in comfortable environment?

People who work in comfortable environment such as those desk jobs in college often act tough , inconsiderate and even borderline condescending / god complex toward me. I had a harder time dealing with these people than dealing with guys who were military members , LE or blue collar jobs. They are cool and generally give me less headache The more uncomfortable background they had , the nicer they are. Is this just me? Speaking this as a nerdy college guy.
