Excluding the West, households composed of extended family members were the norm in many regions. A rapid spread of nuclear family units was a byproduct of the Industrial Revolution and urbanization, coupled with Western global influence.
One notable advantage the extended families had, was the opportunity for a child to pick the most suitable role model within the household. If the parents were awful at raising, the child would just bond with the other family member and consider them the father/mother figure. And just like that, no more daddy/mommy issues and antisocial behavior.
Also relatives could intervene in cases of conflict/abuse, therefore saving the kid from trauma.
The atomization of family units and career-oriented parenting were the downfall of the children's mental health. GG lads
