+ 8, + 22 then + 30 which is the sum of the previous 2 additions

4, 20, 44, ?

Nice work on your alternate solution, but the answer is:

The rule is squares (12, 22, 32, …) in octal. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, [64] but in octal instead of in decimal. Octal “100” (decimal equivalent: 64) is the 8th number in the sequence.
