Part 9 What is noble?

Every enhancement so far in the type “man” has been the work of an aristocratic society – and that is how it will be, again and again, since this sort of society believes in a long ladder of rank order and value distinctions between men, and in some sense needs slavery. Without the pathos of distance as it grows out of the ingrained differences between stations, out of the way the ruling caste maintains an overview and keeps looking down on subservient types and tools, and out of this caste’s equally continuous exercise in obeying and commanding ,in keeping away and below –without this pathos, that other, more mysterious pathos could not have grown at all, that demand for new expansions of distance within the soul itself, the development of states that are increasingly high, rare, distant, tautly drawn and comprehensive, and in short, the enhancement of the type “man,” the constant “self-overcoming of man” (to use a moral formula in a supra-moral sense). Of course, you cannot entertain any humanitarian illusions about how an aristocratic society originates (and any elevation of the type “man” will presuppose an aristocratic society –): the truth is harsh. Let us not be deceived about how every higher culture on earth has begun! Men whose nature was still natural, barbarians in every terrible sense of the word, predatory people who still possessed an unbroken strength of will and lust for power threw themselves on weaker, more civilized, more peaceful races of tradesmen perhaps, or cattle breeders ;or on old and mellow cultures in which the very last life-force was flaring up in brilliant fireworks of spirit and corruption. The noble caste always started out as the barbarian caste. Their supremacy was in psychic, notBeyond Good and Evil physical strength, – they were more complete people (which at any level amounts to saying “more complete beasts” –)

This nigga is so elitist. Apparently the majority of people's purpose (sole purpose or not? i dont know, help clarify) is to help make way for the ubermensch and great men in general. does he mean this statement to be descriptive or prescriptive?

He means it in both ways, descriptive and prescriptive, despite what liberal leaning Nietzschean scholars will tell you.

I don't see what's surprising in this. Every great culture is necessarily based on rank distinction. The elite often come to yield power due to their superior characteristics and values.

But Nietzsche is not endorsing inequality for the sake of inequality, or hierarchy for the sake of hierarchy. He is endorsing it as a necessary condition and outcome of a high culture, which will lead to mankind to a new stage, the overman

Psychic is the sum total of your brain states directed in a particular direction. What Nietzsche wants to emphasize is that barbarians are barbarians, not because they possess superior physical strength ( which non-barbarians can possess as well ) but because of the way their mind works. They use their powers to overcome others ( obstacles, enemies etc )

This self overcoming psychic then translates into a life affirming culture. The cultural elite take their birth amidst warriors.

He didn't dislike compassion but he did dislike pity. Pity is different. Pity does no good to anyone. For the one who looks down from above in pity, he debases himself , wastes his energy and disrupts his life by making ethics it's central concern. As for the one who is pitied from above, it reinforces his low status and results in further insult.

Nietzsche wanted people to realize suffering is often crucial and necessary in life. So it is not something to be pitied in others. On the contrary, one should welcome suffering to grow stronger.
