My theory is that the neck is one of the most vulnerable spots. If you're in combat, your opponent would try to slice your neck because it would be a fatal blow.
With a forward grown maxilla, your neck will be deeper down, which minimizes the chances that someone swinging a blade would hit it. In contrast, with a weak maxilla, your neck is more exposed.
