Both Lamelo Ball and Julian Newman were trained rigorously by their fathers from a very young age with the end goal of making it to the nba. Julian Newman was smurfing in pre high school matches because back then skills could actually overcome physical limitations. It was a combo of facing amateurs and being prodigious. However, Julian Newman was always very short: in a title of a youtube compilation video starring him, he was listed at 4’5 at 11, which is very short. Lamelo ball on the contrary was taking all the accolades at a young age as well but the difference was he was far taller so he had way more potential. Both lived similar lifestyles and upbringings of rigorous training forced by their fathers and smurfing on untrained peers, but only one made the nba due to height alone. Julian Newman ended up 5’5 whereas Lamelo Ball ended up 6’6. Julian Newman was like a cripple training to win the 100m - it was never going to happen.
