One thing people don’t talk about enough when it comes to learning a language is how much the availability of resources can shape your experience. When I was learning German it felt like the whole internet wanted me to succeed. There were endless apps, grammar sites, YouTube channels, Duolingo memes, podcasts, movies, TV shows even German Twitch streamers and Reddit communities. Since it’s a major European language with millions of learners worldwide, it gets a ton of support. The fact that Germany produces so much media films, books, music. I would just binge watch german netflix convincing myself I was studying when I watch just watching movies for 3 hours.
But when you try picking up a language like Chinese, Arabic it’s a whole different story. Even forgetting about the fact thay these languages are drastically different. It is about access. Resources are harder to find often scattered, and sometimes odten beginner-friendly at all. A lot of the media isn’t subtitled or accessible and it’s tough to find casual learning communities or fun content to binge. The learning curve feels steeper. That makes consistency harder, and you sometimes end up relying on dry academic materials or outdated textbooks which can kill your motivation over time.
