I really love the at will employment system because it gives me total control over my life no being stuck in a role that’s draining me just because of some long contract.

For those that don't know in tech job switching is the fastest way to boost salary. Unlike in finance or law firms where you sit in one position for years and get steady raises for loyalty, tech is not like that. You just fuck around, job switch and you can double your pay in just 2–3 years by hopping and landing offers that reflect your current market value especially if it's in hot areas like AI where demand keeps pushing compensation higher.

But the problem is in tech you can't just walk out of a company you are supposed to serve notice period and that is where the US companies at will employment shines. In places like India or Europe you're often locked into 60-90 days or even longer for senior roles which kills it tbh. Those companies operate less efficiently, handovers drag on forever and by the time you're free, that new offer might dry up because recruiters want people who can start ASAP. Like 30-45 days max is usually their limit and buyouts aren't always an option.

Meanwhile my contract says I can resign anytime with no penalties. I can just give the standard two weeks out of courtesy hand over code, docs, and knowledge with 0 friction because American companies have an agile setups then I’m off to the next opportunity no problem. On the flip side I can also be fired at anytime but there's a silver lining to it too.

you’re not considering you can just stay at home in EU and the boss is forced to pay either way because it’s in your rights:feelskek:

Oh yes I forgot. I've heard in france your employer literally can't fire you against your will once you get a job.

same for Italy
Not a bad thing for rotmaxxing. Just get a nice low effort job and then sip wine in your Italian garden, pick olives and eat spaghetti while Americans work their asses off.

I just want a job that will sustain me financially but also won't kill my soul from the inside like a 9-5

I personally like my job. It can get very stressful tho. It's not the hours it is the workload and critical thinking

Is it still easy to make contacts in the industry?

I would suppose such system is not very good for people who want stability but I guess that's the charm of working in tech
Also it works both ways so the ones hiring could leave you without a job because of a petty reason

Tech sounds pretty bad, but I feel like Finance/Law would a slow burning soul crushing project because of this
